Elasticsearch & big data experienced · Zoho
- Elasticsearch is the product's big-data store, and I have worked on it for my whole time at Zoho, including two years on the dedicated Elasticsearch team: high-volume log ingestion, storage and full-text search.
- Cut JVM heap use by about 50% by moving Lucene FST term dictionaries off-heap (OffHeapFST), which meant fewer GC pauses and faster searches.
- Replaced inverted-index postings with compressed bitmap indexes on high-cardinality filter fields: 40% less disk and faster filtered search.
- Built a facade over the Elasticsearch client APIs so the product works across ES versions. Five other ManageEngine products now use it, so their releases no longer wait on ES upgrades.
- Built a reindexing framework that migrates live data across Elasticsearch versions without loss, protecting the 4% of customers on legacy indices.
Full-stack, APIs & cloud
- Ship features across a Java/Tomcat and EmberJS platform on PostgreSQL, MySQL, MSSQL and Elasticsearch, with Docker-based CI/CD.
- Designed synchronous and asynchronous REST search APIs (JSON contracts) that third-party tools use to query product data, and moved ES connectivity from transport clients to REST.
- Built AWS (S3, CloudTrail) and GCP (Cloud Logging) log collectors, including auth, rate limits and failure handling. About 10% of customers use them.
Quality & customers
- Introduced a JUnit 4 unit and integration testing framework for the module, which halved the QA regression workload.
- Worked about 100 customer calls with support: scoping needs, reproducing issues on live enterprise deployments and getting the fixes into the product.
